What to write on a flower card? A few words, but yours

19 October 2026 · 2 min read

The bouquet is chosen, but the space for the message is still empty. You write a sentence, delete it, then wonder whether it sounds too formal. It happens: a few lines for someone dear can be harder to find than a whole page.

A good start is to think about what you would say if you were handing over the flowers yourself. The card can keep that same voice.

For a birthday

Instead of trying to fit in every possible wish, choose one that relates to the person. You can start from these ideas and add a detail of your own.

“Happy birthday! May you have time for the things that do you good, and dear people close by.”

“To all the lovely beginnings ahead of you. Happy birthday, with love!”

“Today, a bouquet. When we meet, the hug I'm saving for you.”

For a thank-you

If you can, say what you are thankful for. Being specific makes the message more personal than very elaborate wording.

“Thank you for being there exactly when I needed it.”

“For your patience, your help and the way you make things easier.”

“A small gesture for help that meant a lot.”

For someone you love

There's no need to borrow a voice that isn't yours. If the two of you are more spontaneous than solemn, keep it natural.

“I remembered how you smile when you get flowers. I wanted that to happen today too.”

“For our ordinary days, which I love.”

“I didn't wait for an anniversary. I missed you.”

For a day with no occasion

Sometimes the nicest thing is that there doesn't have to be a reason on the calendar.

“I saw these flowers and thought of you.”

“A little colour for your table and a kind thought from me.”

“For today. That's all.”

Before you send the message

Re-read the name, check the signature and keep any special characters. If the message is intimate, remember the recipient may open it in a shared space. Choose words they will feel comfortable with.

The examples are a starting point. Change a word, add a memory, remove what you wouldn't say yourself. Choose the bouquet that will go with it. The flowers carry the gesture further; the card gives it your voice.
