The Phalaenopsis orchid: a good spot and an unhurried rhythm
19 October 2026 · 2 min read
An orchid in bloom quietly transforms a corner of a room. Because its flowers look so carefully drawn, caring for it can seem complicated. For Phalaenopsis, the starting point is simpler: the right spot and attention to what the plant needs.
The advice here applies to Phalaenopsis. Other orchids may have different needs, so keep the plant's label or ask for it to be identified when you buy it.
Choose the light before you choose the shelf
Phalaenopsis likes good, filtered light, without strong direct sun. A very sunny windowsill may need the protection of a curtain.
Before you put it somewhere just because it looks good there, watch the light throughout the day. A photo taken in the morning won't necessarily tell you what that corner is like in the afternoon.
Water according to the growing medium, not the day of the week
Let the medium dry out partly between waterings and let the water drain well. Don't leave the pot standing in water collected in a decorative outer pot, and avoid water sitting in the centre of the leaves.
These guidelines are described in the Royal Horticultural Society's guide to Phalaenopsis. The rhythm depends on conditions in your home; a fixed rule like “every Sunday” doesn't suit every plant.
The flowers end; the care continues
The end of flowering doesn't mean the plant needs replacing. Keep caring for it, and ask for advice suited to its condition before cutting the stem or repotting it.
An overall photo, one of the leaves and one of the pot are more useful in a conversation than a simple “it's not doing well”. Also note where the plant sits, how you water it and when you noticed the change.
When you choose an orchid for someone
Think about whether the person enjoys looking after plants and has a bright spot. A plant is a gift that becomes part of the home's routine.
You can send the pot with a simple message: “For your quiet corner.” Add the plant's name too, so the recipient can find the right care advice later.
